With funding supplied by the Department of Business for the Labour Market Program, CHARTTES Industry Training Advisory Council NT will be providing training to the performing and visual arts / Live events sector for Project Management.

If you are currently employed within the performing arts sector and want to learn more about the management and logistics of hosting events, festivals and concerts, please register your interest.

The topics to be covered include:

Join us in developing the local emerging leaders of Darwin Tourism. Hospitality & Events (T.H.E)

Following the success of the recent mentoring program in Alice Springs (see "T.H.E Alice Springs article for participants feedback), CHARTTES are offering 'T.H.E Leadership Link', in Darwin to contribute to the growth of leadership capacity for the T.H.E sectors across the NT.

The program is designed to explore issues such as; professional development/careers pathways; understanding the leadership role and managing team diverse skills and abilities.

The program will be run over 8 months commencing in April 2015 and will be open to a maximum of 12 mentors and mentees.

Join us at Adina Vibe Waterfront on the 19th March 2015 at 8am-10am for breakfast and learn what is involved in the program, how you could become a mentor, or nominate one of your emerging leaders as a mentee, in this empowering mentoring opportunity.

T.H.E. Leadership Link – Mentoring Programme – Alice Springs

Feb 2015

 With the assistance of the Department of Business and Tourism Central Australia, CHARTTES facilitated a mentoring program “T.H.E Leadership Link” to support the growth of local emerging leaders within the Tourism. Hospitality and Events industry.

The program involved eight mentoring relationships being established with employers and employees throughout Alice Springs.

 A series of six breakfast discussions were held as well as the one- on-one sessions with mentors/mentees.

The discussions explored issues of leadership including:

  • Traits and skills of credible leadership
  • Managing resistant workers
  • Ethical leadership
  • Six Thinking Hats – a strategy for problems and solutions
  • Leadership Lessons from Sports
  • Building employee engagement
  • Managing career development

 Whilst there is some challenge to measure the effectiveness of the programme as a result of the confidential nature of the mentoring conversations, anecdotal feedback from employers of mentees and comments of mentors was very positive.

 Feedback from Mentees

  • The breakfast sessions helped me to gain a broader perspective and to question my established ways of thinking.
  • Flexibility of sessions to adapt topics to suit mentors (worked well).  Benefit (gained) from views and experiences of workers within a range of different workplaces. 
  • I acquired very useful tools to deal with specific situation not only in the monthly catch-ups but also with my mentor.  I learnt different aspects of what a leadership role should have.  
  • Ability of facilitator in generating discussion (worked well) Plus recommendation of books and follow up emails with useful links.

 From Mentors:

  • It’s refreshing to talk to keen and enthusiastic people and help to guide them and help them develop in their careers.
  • Breakfast sessions were an excellent opportunity to learn more about leadership and were always informative and relevant. 
  • Believe that what worked well was the opportunity for businesses to select key team members to develop so they can contribute to the organisation’s performance and objectives. 
  • This will definitely assist with the productivity of the business.  Breakfast sessions were a great part of the programme and an opportunity for the mentors also to further learn about leadership.

Foundation Skills in the Workplace

On behalf of the NT Department of Business, CHARTTES Industry Training Advisory Council NT will be hosting a series of three breakfast workshops to explore foundation skills in the workplace.

These three workshops are for employers who want to develop an understanding of what foundation skills are all about, and the benifits that can be gained by addressing foundation skills at work - considering both workplace practices as well as employee needs.

We will explore simple strategies that can have significant impact on productivity and performance of your employees.

These interactive and informative workshops will be held at Adina Vibe Hotel, Darwin Waterfront from 8am - 10am on the following dates:

Foundation Skills Training Package

This project is a shared project with CHARTTES Training Advisory Council, NT and Human Services Training Advisory Council, NT to provide VET trainers and assessors with the capacity to address foundation skill requirements within assessment tools and improve assessment outcomes within vocational units at the point of assessment.

Three workshops, held with VET practitioners and LLN specialists informed the development of the final resources which include a step by step guide on 'how to' address foundation skills within VET assessment activities. The resources are available at no cost and can be downloaded from the CHARTTES, HSTAC or Taking the Lead websites.

Workforce Futures Program

CHARTTES have partnered with the Australian Hotels Association NT to provide a confidential workforce diagnostic program which will benefit locals businesses in the future.

The Workforce Futures program is government funded and is being delivered free to hospitality employers across the NT.

CHARTTES Executive Officer, Yvonne Webb, is acting as the 'Skills Advisor" and is working one-on-one with a number of businesses on:

  • Up-skilling

AUSSIEHOST Training NT

Questions and Answers

Q. What is AussieHost Training?

A. AussieHost Training is a nationally recognised customer service training program that focuses on key interpersonal communications. The program looks at the elements of delivering quality service in a variety of Tourism and Hospitality environments.

Q. What is required of the employer?

A. Participation fee of $275.00+GST per person will apply. In addition, a commitment to release the employee for structured one day, off-job training, and provision of on-job mentoring support to ensure a transfer of learning into the workplace.

Q. What are the benefits to employees?

A. This program allows participants to increase or develop their customer service skills and gain a certificate from a nationally recognised customer service training program. As the course will be held in the participants community, they have the opportunity to network with other local operators/employees.

Q. How long will it take to complete?

A. The course will be completed in a one day workshop, commencing at 9am and concluding at 5pm. Certificates will be issues via mail shortly after completion.

Q. What staff should I sent to AussieHost Training?

A. All staff who have recently entered customer service positions and who have not attended any other customer service training. The program is also suitable for any person involved in Customer Service but is yet to have the opportunity of participating in a course that demonstrates the essential customer service concepts. This training may also provide a reminder of the importance of Service Skills for long term employees.

Q. What are the eligibility requirements?

A. There are no pre-requisitis for this program.

Q. What catering will be provided?

A. Tea and coffee will be provided throughout the day with a light morning and afternoon tea. Participants are to provide their own lunch.

Indigenous Workforce Development Strategy

 

CHARTTES Training Advisory Council partnered with Cross Cultural Consultants to work with the Hospitality sector throughout Regional Northern Territory in the development of this Indigenous Workforce Strategy. While the document was developed with sector members in the Regions we would also like to recognise the contribution of employers in the Darwin area as the strategy, tools and help sheets will have a Territory wide application. 

The project team’s objective was to work closely with the Hospitality sector across the Northern Territory to develop strategies to drive demand for Indigenous training and employment,and to integrate skills development for employment, retention and career development of Indigenous people. Our project partners, Cross Cultural Consultants ensured that the development of the strategy incorporated Indigenous identities, cultures, knowledge and values as strong considerations in the development of the strategy, implementation and evaluation stages. 

The Hospitality sector continues to experience skills and labour shortages throughout the Northern Territory. The sector recognises the need to expand the traditional workforce through accessing and providing opportunities to Indigenous people to enter the sector. These opportunities are matched by a strong desire from visitors to the Northern Territory who are seeking an Indigenous experience. 

This document was developed with the sector and for the sector and provides the background research and recommendations which assisted in developing the Tools and Help Sheets for implementing successful Indigenous Workforce Development programs. We would like to thank our Industry partners who assisted in the development of this work. Through these partnerships and the development of the strategy and implementation tools we aimed to provide the means for the hospitality sector to continue to implement successful programs into the future.

eQUIPD Magazine 2014

eQUIPD is a personal interactive handbook to assist all Year 10 students in South Australia and Northern Territory with their Personal Learning Plan. CHARTTES contributed this year's NT issue to provide helpful information helpful information on careers in the Tourism & Hospitality, Sports, Fitness & Recreation and Cultural & Creative sectors.

An "Experience Tourism and Hospitality" video clip was produced in conjunction with this 2014 eQUIPD magazine, showcasing interviews with people who are currently working in the industry throughout the Territory.
